It’s hard to believe that it is February already which means that leagues are getting into their playoffs and bonspiel season is about to begin.
I believe that thus far the season has been very successful with an influx of members, a full rental schedule, successful learn to curl and school programs and was highlighted by the BC Juniors. A special note of thanks to Alex Horvath for taking the lead in hosting the BC Juniors.
Further to my December note about our “sister club” relationship with Morioka CC in Japan. Three Morioka curlers will be coming to play at VCC in the SooLong bonspiel in March 2020. The three have asked to be placed on different teams, which I am sure our organizers will accommodate.
My “ask” of membership: There are 3 items that we can work together on to make our club even better.
- Opportunities for Improvement: This year, the VCC has had an influx of new members, with rentals at or near capacity, and ice time in general is at a premium as a result. Resources – office, ice crew, bar staff, volunteers – are occasionally stretched. Our goal is to keep things running as efficiently as possible and in the best interests of the Club. However, if you see something that needs to be addressed and have a solution/suggestion to address the concern, please bring both to the attention of Paul Dixon, as the General Manager, in writing so that it can be looked at and addressed.
- Courtesy: Further to point one and staff capacity, we have unfortunately had a few club members communicate their concerns in an assertive/aggressive manner to staff. This is not acceptable as it goes against the nature of our sport and the standards of conduct I would expect from all members. Please be polite and understanding.
- Summer rental opportunities: For the most part the rink sits vacant all summer and thus there are opportunities to rent out the space and generate revenue for the club. This coming summer we have two major rentals planned, being the Times Colonist book sale and the Olympic basketball trials. There is room for more. My “ask” is for rental ideas with contact information when ever possible.
Thank you for your continued support and good luck with the remainder of the season.
