The best women curlers in the province will be heading to Victoria next winter, Curl BC has announced.
The 2018 Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship, Presented by Best Western, will take place at the Victoria Curling Club from January 2-7, 2018.
It is anticipated that the final four games will be televised on Shaw TV.
The event will showcase BC’s top women curlers who will be playing for the opportunity to be the home crowd favourite at the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts that is scheduled for Penticton from January 27-February 4, 2018.
Victoria Curling Club General Manager Paul Dixon said: “We’re excited to partner with Curl BC to bring the BC Scotties to Victoria. The Victoria Curling Club is committed to being the home of curling excellence and this event will bring some of the best athletes in the province to our ice. It’s a terrific opportunity for fans of the game to see top teams in person at a local venue.”
Curl BC CEO Scott Braley said: “We know that curlers and curling fans will have a fantastic time at the BC Scotties in Victoria. With this event in the provincial capital, the Winter Olympics taking place in South Korea, and the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts happening in Penticton, it’s a great time to be a curling fan in BC.”
The format of the event is an eight-team round-robin, with a four-team page playoff.
Two berths will be allocated to the Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) points winners (the two BC women’s team with the highest ranking on the CTRS list).
There will be two open events to decide the remaining berths, one in Hope and one at a to-be-announced location in the Thompson/Okanagan region. Three teams will qualify at the first event and three teams will qualify at the second.
There will be no defending champion team in 2018.
The Victoria Curling Club is an eight-sheet facility in downtown Victoria.
